„I am a traditional lawyer — very interested in people, companies and legal, strategic and exciting issues. It is important to me to represent my clients with commitment. I do this by listening to them, analysing the issues that are relevant to their decisions and working with them to develop targeted solutions.”
Dr Martin Riedel is one of the most experienced energy lawyers in the country. An award-winning lawyer, he is a founding partner of Aecoute.
After completing a traditional banking apprenticeship, Martin Riedel studied law and political science at the Free University of Berlin and in Hanover. The Chernobyl disaster sensitised him to the risks of energy supply and was the starting point for his career as a lawyer specialising in energy, climate and environmental law. In 1995, he wrote his doctoral thesis on the standardisation and harmonisation of environmental law.
As an assistant at the Institute for Energy Law at the Free University of Berlin in the early 1990s, Martin Riedel witnessed the successful fight by Dr Peter Becker and Wolf Büttner for a competitive energy supply in the new German states — and against the planned transfer of the GDR’s electricity and energy assets to a few large corporations under the Unification Treaty. Alongside these two mentors, he is involved as a lawyer and partner in the entrepreneurial development of the law firm Becker Büttner Held (BBH), which specialises in energy law.
He advises on the financing of power plant construction, drafts energy contracts andis a co-founder of energy supply companies, which he still advises on strategy. He is involved in legislative projects such as the EnWG, the EEG and the KWKG and is a valued expert in the Bundestag.
Martin Riedel publishes on energy law topics, gives lectures and shapes the public discourse on current energy law issues. As a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Potsdam and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, he passes on his knowledge and passion for the legal profession and energy law to young lawyers.
He acts as a consultant, supervisory board member and chairman of advisory and supervisory boards for companies in the field of energy and environmental law.
